Swordfish II

Spike Spiegel´s Swordfish II is a converted Asteroid racer armed with four machine guns, multiple missile launchers, and a single plasma cannon. Fifty years after the Gate Accident that destroyed the moon and killed 4.5 billion people on Earth, in the year 2071 AD, humanity (only 1.5 billion people) lives in the different planets, moons, space stations and industrial asteroids of the Solar System. The crew of the spaceship Bebop travel the solar system through perfected Astral Gates trying to apprehend bounties. Nation-states have collapsed, and various races and peoples live throughout the solar system. As the Gates make it possible to cross the System in a matter of weeks, it became unfeasible for law enforcement to pursue criminals away from a given world. Criminal activity increased at every level of society; small-time criminals could act with relative impunity, and ruthless crime syndicates became as powerful as multinational corporations. In response, the bounty system of the Old West was reinstated by the Inter-Solar System Police (ISSP). Bounty hunters are encouraged to capture criminals and return them (alive and relatively unharmed) to the authorities for monetary rewards (Woolongs), in part through a regular television broadcast of "Big Shot", a bounty-hunter news TV show that is broadcasted with a western motif because in the slang of the era, the term "Cowboys" refers to bounty hunters.
